New Delhi: India captain Shreyas Iyer admitted that Ireland fully outplayed the T20 world champions, following a stunning 2-0 series defeat in the T20I series on Sunday.
Ireland first secured a 34-run victory in the opening match before edging India by just one run in the second game, completing a memorable series win against a top-ranked side.
Speaking after the series, Iyer praised Ireland’s planning and execution, acknowledging their superior reading of conditions. He said the hosts executed their strategies better in all departments, especially bowling and fielding.
“Not a great series but kudos to them for the way they played. They had a tremendous idea how the wicket would play and their field work was phenomenal,” Iyer said. “The bowlers were phenomenal with their execution. They outplayed us in that department.”
Despite the setback, India found a positive in the debut performance of pacer Prince Yadav, who impressed with figures of 3 for 22. Iyer also noted contributions from Suryansh Shedge, highlighting the potential of the newcomers.
Ireland captain Lorcan Tucker hailed the victory as a landmark moment for Irish cricket, saying the team had responded brilliantly to the challenge of facing India. He credited the squad’s simplicity in approach and strong intent across both matches.
“We challenged the lads to show the world this was not a one-off, and they responded,” Tucker said. “We showed that cricket can be simple and effective.”
Player of the series Moondra, who delivered a standout performance, described the win as emotional and said he was still processing the achievement. He credited the team environment and management support for his success.
Ireland’s victory, achieved despite limited experience in the squad and injury setbacks, is being seen as one of their most significant T20I series wins, while India will look to regroup ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
