New Delhi:The Indian Army has unveiled an indigenously developed Xtreme Weather Grade (XWG) diesel, a specialised fuel capable of keeping military combat and logistics vehicles operational in temperatures as low as minus 42 degrees Celsius. The innovation marks a major step towards strengthening India’s self reliance in defence logistics and enhancing operational capabilities in extreme weather conditions.
The advanced fuel has been jointly developed by the Indian Army and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited over the past year. Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth described the launch as a significant milestone, highlighting that the project reflects India’s growing indigenous capability in defence technology.
Unlike conventional diesel, which thickens and clogs engine filters in freezing temperatures, the new BS VI compliant XWG diesel has been engineered to perform efficiently in extreme cold without requiring any modifications to the Army’s existing fleet of vehicles.
The introduction of the specialised fuel is expected to significantly improve the mobility and operational readiness of military units deployed in high altitude regions, where severe winter conditions have traditionally posed major logistical challenges. Earlier, conventional diesel often froze in sub zero temperatures, limiting the movement of military vehicles and affecting operational efficiency.
With XWG diesel now available, Army vehicles will be able to function reliably even in some of the country’s harshest terrains, ensuring uninterrupted transportation of troops, equipment and supplies during extreme weather conditions.
The Indian Army said the development represents a major advancement in defence preparedness while reducing dependence on imported specialised fuels. By leveraging indigenous technology, the initiative supports the country’s broader goal of achieving self reliance in critical defence infrastructure and logistics, while providing armed forces with a reliable fuel solution for operations in challenging mountainous environments.
