PANAJI: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) commissioned its indigenously built Fast Patrol Vessel ICGS Ajit at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) on October 9, adding a new vessel to its fleet and reinforcing India’s push towards self reliance in defence manufacturing under the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.
The commissioning ceremony was presided over by Dr. Sirish Choudhary, Principal Integrated Financial Advisor (ICG), from the Indian Defence Accounts Service. The vessel will be stationed at Okha, Gujarat, to support maritime security and coastal protection operations.
Measuring 52 metres in length and displacing 320 tonnes, ICGS Ajit has a crew capacity of 39 personnel. Its armament includes a CRN 91 30 mm naval gun and two 12.7 mm M2 machine guns mounted on remotely controlled, stabilised systems. The vessel is equipped with an integrated bridge system, fire control system and integrated platform management system to support operational efficiency.
Designed for multiple maritime missions, ICGS Ajit will undertake coastal and maritime surveillance, search and rescue operations, anti smuggling activities and marine pollution response. Its deployment is expected to strengthen the Coast Guard’s ability to respond to emergencies and safeguard India’s maritime interests.
ICGS Ajit is the seventh of eight Adamya class Fast Patrol Vessels being constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited for the Indian Coast Guard. The vessels have been designed in house by GSL, with more than 60 per cent of ICGS Ajit’s construction content sourced indigenously. This reflects the growing role of domestic shipbuilding capabilities in meeting the operational requirements of India’s maritime security forces.
Goa Shipyard Limited handed over the vessel to the Indian Coast Guard on August 25, 2026, ahead of its formal commissioning.
The contract for the construction of all eight Fast Patrol Vessels was awarded in March 2022 at a total cost of Rs 473 crore. The first vessel in the series, ICGS Adamya, was commissioned at Paradip in September 2025.
The commissioning of ICGS Ajit marks another step in strengthening the Indian Coast Guard’s operational fleet while advancing indigenous defence production and maritime security preparedness.
