PANAJI: Mohammad Sadiq Shaikh was detained by the Panaji police on suspicion of cheating a woman out of Rs 5.5 lakh by pretending to sell her a government job and a housing board property.
After a 43-year-old Pilar housewife named Nassrin Banu filed a complaint accusing Shaikh of posing as a Goa Housing Board officer in Porvorim, the 43-year-old accused from Bhatlem was taken into custody.
Her allegation claims that he used the guise of selling her a Porvorim plot to persuade her to send Rs. 3.3 lakh. He presented her with a fictitious plot design, allocation letter, and receipt with survey numbers 84, 85, 86, 88, and 89.
She also claimed that she paid an extra Rs 2.2 lakh to Shaikh in exchange for his promise of a clerk position in the Directorate of Accounts. A fake appointment letter from the Office of Industries, Trade, and Commerce was then issued by him.
Since the violations took place prior to the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the police have filed a complaint under Sections 419 (impersonation), 468 (forgery), and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code.
