PANAJI: Panaji Police have registered a gambling case against a 25-year-old man who was allegedly caught red-handed accepting matka bets from members of the public near the EDC Building in Panaji.
According to police, the case was registered on July 1 based on a complaint filed by HC Samir Naik of Panaji Police Station.
Police said that at around 3.30 pm, the accused, Pravin Maurya (25), originally from Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, and presently residing at St. Inez, Goa, was allegedly found accepting bets on numerical figures from the public near Phadte Arts, opposite SVC Bank, close to the EDC Building in Panaji.
During the raid, police seized ₹1,680 in cash in different denominations along with other gambling articles allegedly used for accepting bets.
The accused was arrested at 5.30 pm and was subsequently released on bail at 5.45 pm on a personal bond with one surety.
An offence has been registered under Section 11(2)(a) of the Goa, Daman and Diu Public Gambling Act. Further investigation is being carried out by HC Samir Naik of Panaji Police Station.
