CHORLA: Heavy rainfall coupled with thunder, lightning and powerful winds battered the Chorla Ghat stretch on Wednesday evening, causing a large roadside tree to crash onto the highway and temporarily halt traffic movement in the area.
The fallen tree completely blocked the road, leaving vehicles stranded on both sides of the ghat section and resulting in a major traffic disruption. Despite the severity of the incident, no injuries or damage to vehicles were reported.
According to sources, the incident took place at around 5 pm after intense weather conditions swept through the region. Authorities at the Keri-Sattari check-post were immediately alerted about the obstruction, following which efforts were initiated to clear the road and resume normal traffic flow.
Several commuters travelling through the ghat route were forced to wait until the concerned agencies arrived at the spot to remove the tree and ensure safe passage for vehicles.
Apart from Chorla Ghat, multiple areas in North Goa also witnessed sudden heavy showers and stormy conditions during the evening hours. Localities such as Sanklim, Bicholim and Mayem experienced intense rainfall along with frequent thunder and lightning strikes. Aldona received comparatively lighter showers, though continuous lightning and rumbling thunder signalled unstable weather conditions across the region.
The abrupt change in weather brought a noticeable drop in temperature, while authorities and locals advised travellers to exercise caution on ghat roads due to slippery surfaces and the risk of additional trees or branches collapsing during ongoing adverse weather.
