MORMUGAO: The Mormugao Municipal Council ( MMC ) has created a record of sorts and earned a revenue of as much as Rs 97 lakhs from the seven day Saptah fair.
Adressing media at Vacso, MMC chairperson said that ,it was for the first time in many years that Saptah fair had not been given extension and that MMC had managed to earn highest revenue from Saptah fair.
“It is a record this year that the Saptah fair got tremendous response from the people and MMC earned the highest revenue and created history. It is for the first time that the MMC has earned around Rs 97 lakhs as revenue from the fair and that too within a period of seven days without any extensions being given.
We have delivered what we have promised and cleared the Saptah fair and the Swatantra Path road in seven days time without any extensions as happens usually for Saptah.
The MMC and the MLA Krishna Salkar had earlier assured the people that the fair will be cleared within seven days and today our staff along with police and electricity department are carrying out the works of clearing and disconnecting the power supply” said Borker
.”The major issue is the inconvenience faced by the people of the city who sometimes have to cope with smell of open urinations and it is only because of the annual saptah festival that we allow the fair for seven days and even provide mobile toilets but some stall operators or their workers defecate in the open causing problems.
The fairs used to last for 15 days earlier but with rising population and such rising issues the days have been got to seven days now and we cannot allow extension because there is a court order restricting the fair for seven days.
However we are glad that the Saptah fair this year got a tremendous response from the people and we also ensured that we offer all the facilities to the stall operators . We mandated the fire extinguisher in eateries and also managed to get Gobi Manchurian stalls with due permission from the FDA and even arranged space for cooking in a MMC building so that we don’t disappoint anyone.
However , despite huge requests from the People and stall operators, we cannot go beyond seven days and the roads will be opened for the people immediately ” said Borker
