PANAJI: The Central government has been urged by Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Shet Tanavade to provide special funding and technical assistance in order to safeguard Goa’s khazan fields, which are in danger due to abrupt weather variations.
Extreme weather phenomena brought on by climate change, such as altered rainfall patterns, flooding, and increasing sea levels, pose a hazard to these regions. “These factors are causing permanent land loss, riverbank erosion, saline groundwater pollution, infiltration, and flooding of neighbouring villages,” Tanavade stated on Monday during the parliamentary session.
In addition, he called for immediate action to restore the Khazan lands and resume farming on them.
“To revitalize Khazan lands and ensure their sustainable management, which will bring back thousands of hectares of land under cultivation, stop the permanent loss of land, and make it more resilient to climate changes, I urge the government to provide assistance in the form of special grants, technical expertise, and a robust policy framework,” he continued
