New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the Women’s Reservation Bill as one of the most significant decisions of the 21st century while addressing a national gathering at Vigyan Bhawan during the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Sammelan’.
Highlighting the importance of the proposed legislation, he said the move is a tribute to the strength and dignity of women and reflects a collective national effort decades in the making. He emphasized that the bill, which has been discussed for nearly 40 years, is expected to be implemented by 2029 and represents a defining moment in India’s democratic journey.
The Prime Minister noted that there is broad political consensus on the issue, with multiple parties contributing over time to bring the proposal closer to reality. He stressed the importance of cooperation and dialogue to ensure the bill’s successful passage.
Referring to the growing influence of women in governance, Modi pointed out that increased participation in decision-making leads to more inclusive and sensitive policymaking. He cited examples from grassroots governance, including women’s involvement in Panchayats and initiatives like the Jal Jeevan Mission, where women have played a critical role in implementation and leadership.
He also highlighted India’s progress in empowering women, noting their presence in top leadership roles such as the President and Finance Minister, as well as strong representation in local bodies. According to him, expanding this representation to Parliament and state assemblies will further strengthen democracy and accelerate social progress.
The Prime Minister underlined that the reform aligns with a broader vision of an inclusive and equitable India, where social justice is embedded in governance. He called the moment a turning point, marking the end of decades of delay.
Union Minister Annpurna Devi described the development as a powerful symbol of women’s determination and contribution to nation-building. She praised the initiative as a reflection of women’s voices and experiences across the country.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also expressed strong support, stating that women nationwide stand behind the move and view it as a transformative step toward greater empowerment.
The announcement reinforces the government’s focus on increasing women’s participation across political and social spheres, positioning the bill as a milestone reform in shaping India’s future.
