PANAJI/MARGAO: North and South Goa district Magistrate have issued orders prohibited swimming in waterfalls, abandoned quarries, rivers, lakes and other water bodies until further orders in the jurisdiction of North and South Goa District.
Sunday marks the official start of the order, which will be in effect for 60 days unless it is revoked before then.
The North and South district Magistrate took note of the drowning incidents that have been reported in the past in waterfalls, abandoned quarries, rivers, lakes, and other water bodies in the North and South Goa District and issued an order under section 144 of the Cr P C, stating that swimming in these waters poses a serious risk to people’s lives.
The Collectors in their respective orders said that he is convinced that the circumstances do not permit the serving of notices individually upon the persons against whom this order is directed in a timely manner and that, therefore, the order under section 144 of the Cr P C is issued.
The Collectors claimed that it is necessary to take urgent measures in this regard in order to prevent any danger to human life or the safety and security of the general public.
The Mamlatdar and the local Police Inspector are also required by the order to uphold vigilance within their respective jurisdictions and to enforce the order.
If the order is not followed, there will be consequences under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code and other applicable current laws.
