PANAJI: Ahead of Eid Al Adha celebrations scheduled between May 28 and May 30, the Goa Government has clarified that only buffaloes will be permitted for Qurbani in the State and slaughter can take place exclusively at Goa Meat Complex Ltd. (GMCL), Usgao.
The decision was conveyed during a meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Dr. C. Candavelou, IAS, at the Secretariat in Porvorim with government officials and representatives of the Association of All Goa Muslim Jamats.
Officials informed the gathering that slaughter of animals other than buffaloes, including bulls and similar cattle, will be treated as illegal. The government also warned that conducting Qurbani at any place other than GMCL Usgao would invite immediate legal proceedings without further notice.
The Chief Secretary reviewed arrangements made at GMCL for slaughter operations and transportation of meat across Goa and issued necessary directions to ensure smooth management during the festival period.
Authorities stated that animals brought for Qurbani must be accompanied by certificates under Rule 96 of the Transportation of Animals Rules, 2001, under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
The government has also directed transporters entering Goa through Mollem, Poinguinim, Keri-Sattari, Dodamarg and Patradevi check-posts to inform designated veterinary officers in advance for smooth transportation of animals to GMCL Usgao.
Further, meat slaughtered outside Goa in approved slaughterhouses will only be allowed into the State if transported in refrigerated vehicles and accompanied by Ante Mortem and Post Mortem certificates along with valid licence details.
Officials warned that illegal import or improper transportation of beef would lead to confiscation and filing of FIRs against the importers or transporters involved.
