New Delhi: India and China have agreed to continue addressing outstanding border issues through established diplomatic and military mechanisms, while stressing the importance of maintaining peace and stability along the Line of Actual Control.
The understanding came during discussions held in New Delhi under the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India China Border Affairs. Both sides reviewed the situation along the LAC and held detailed discussions on boundary delimitation, border management and mechanisms for cooperation across the frontier.
The two countries agreed to make continued use of existing channels, including the WMCC and meetings between local military commanders, to address pending matters and reduce the possibility of misunderstandings along the border.
The latest discussions also followed earlier engagement between the Special Representatives of the two countries. India raised the need for an early meeting of the expert level mechanism dealing with trans border rivers and emphasised the importance of exchanging technical information concerning upstream water projects.
The Indian delegation was led by Joint Secretary for East Asia Sujit Ghosh, while the Chinese delegation was headed by Hou Yanqi, Director General of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department in China’s foreign ministry.
The latest dialogue comes against the backdrop of a long running boundary dispute that has remained a major source of tension between the two neighbours. Relations deteriorated sharply following the Galwan Valley clash in 2020, which resulted in fatalities on both sides and triggered a prolonged military standoff.
Since then, India and China have maintained substantial military deployments and infrastructure along sensitive stretches of the frontier. Several rounds of diplomatic and military negotiations have helped manage tensions, although significant differences remain.
Both countries have repeatedly stressed the importance of peace and stability along the border for improving broader bilateral relations. The latest talks indicate that New Delhi and Beijing intend to continue using established diplomatic and military mechanisms to manage unresolved issues and prevent fresh tensions along the LAC.
