New Delhi:
In a significant move to bolster bilateral ties, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit the White House in February 2025, his first meeting with US President Donald Trump since Trump’s second term began. This upcoming visit underscores the strong strategic partnership and friendly relations between India and the United States. During a recent telephonic conversation, Trump and Modi discussed critical issues including immigration, security, and trade, reaffirming their commitment to global peace, stability, and mutual cooperation.
On January 28, 2025, PM Modi and President Trump engaged in a productive telephonic conversation to address various bilateral and global issues. Trump confirmed that PM Modi will visit the White House in February, highlighting the robust relationship between the two nations. This visit is particularly significant as it marks one of the first high-level interactions between the two leaders since Trump’s second term commenced on January 20, 2025.
The discussion between the two leaders touched upon the sensitive issue of immigration, with Trump emphasizing that PM Modi has assured him that India will take the necessary steps to address the return of Indian immigrants living illegally in the US. Reports indicate that around 18,000 Indian immigrants have been identified as living illegally in the US, and Trump expressed confidence that Modi will handle this matter appropriately.
In addition to immigration, the conversation covered a range of regional security issues, including the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe. Trump stressed the importance of India increasing its procurement of American-made security equipment and moving towards a fair bilateral trading relationship. This emphasis on defense cooperation and balanced trade reflects the ongoing efforts to strengthen the strategic ties between the two countries.
The leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the US-India strategic partnership and the Indo-Pacific Quad partnership, which includes the US, India, Japan, and Australia. India is scheduled to host a Quad summit later this year, further solidifying the cooperation among these nations.
The visit follows a history of warm relations between Trump and Modi, dating back to Trump’s first term from 2017 to 2021. During this period, Trump’s last foreign trip was to India, where he and Modi addressed large gatherings in Houston and Ahmedabad. Despite previous trade tensions, with Trump having criticized India’s trade practices, the current dialogue indicates a renewed focus on mutual cooperation and a balanced trade relationship.
