MARGAO: Several members of the Hindu community filed individual complaints against a resident who they said was from Moti Dongor, Margao, and was allegedly employed by the Electricity Department, alleging that the resident had offended and hurt Hindu sentiments.
Rahul Shanbhag and Bhagwan Redkar led a delegation that visited PI Tulsidas Naik, the in-charge of the Margao police station, and pleaded strongly that he be arrested for disturbing the tranquility by offending the Hindu community’s religious feelings. After a patient hearing with the delegation, PI Tulsidas pledged to take action against the criminals.
Later, Rahul, Bhagwan, and other members of the group told the media that they had calmly filed a complaint with the police, but they threatened to agitate if the police did not take any action.
Bhagwan Redkar claimed in his complaint that the accused had intentionally offended religious sentiments and outraged Hindu sentiments by making disparaging remarks about Hindu deities and inciting hatred and violence against the Hindu faith, in violation of Section 302 of the BNS Act and Section 299, which is cognizable and non-bailable in nature.
Facebook posts and images that offend religious feelings have the potential to disrupt social harmony and become a law-and-order issue. He said, “Such an act should not be taken lightly as it will affect people at large all over the country who belong to the Hindu religion.”
He also asked the police to act quickly against the accused, file a formal complaint under the relevant legal provisions, carry out a comprehensive investigation into the matter, and take the required actions to stop similar incidents in the future.
Rahul Shanbhag said in his complaint that the accused had shared offensive and improper images and remarks on social media in his Facebook account, hurting Hindus’ religious feelings. “This individual is attempting to stir up excitement in the community where we all wish to coexist quietly. He demanded quick action, saying, “This will further create a law & order situation in the state because this message has gone viral & spoiled peace & harmony of the state.”
