CORTALIM: A fresh political twist is taking shape in Cortalim, with former Sancoale Deputy Sarpanch Darrick Vales indicating that he is set to join the Congress and is likely to stake his claim to contest the upcoming Assembly elections from the Cortalim constituency.
Vales said his entire family has remained loyal to the Congress for several years and that he too has been associated with the party and its ideology. He said supporters and well-wishers have now been urging him to “aim bigger” and take his political journey to the next level by entering the Assembly electoral battle.
Speaking about his political background, Vales said his family has had a strong political presence in Cortalim over the years. He himself has been elected as a panch member of Sancoale Panchayat for two consecutive terms, while members of his family have also served as elected panchayat representatives in the past.
Vales’ growing activities across the Cortalim constituency have also added to speculation about his political plans. For the past few days, he has been undertaking a food grain and essential items distribution programme across different parts of the constituency, reaching out to households ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi.
The distribution programme was held at Sancoale on Tuesday, followed by an event at Pajentar Hall in Cortalim on Wednesday and another programme at Upasnagar on Thursday.
Vales said the distribution programme would continue until Ganesh Chaturthi, with an effort to reach almost every household across the Cortalim constituency. He said the initiative was aimed at reaching out to people across the constituency and extending support to families during the festive season.
His proposed political move, if formally announced, could add another dimension to the electoral landscape in Cortalim, where the Congress has traditionally maintained a presence and several local leaders have been active in grassroots politics.
Vales said his decision to look beyond local-level politics came following repeated requests from his supporters, who believe his political experience, family background and grassroots connect could help him take up a larger role.
With his proposed entry into the Congress and reported interest in contesting the Assembly polls, attention is now turning towards whether the party will consider his candidature and how his move could reshape the political equations in Cortalim.
