MAPUSA: Councillor Priya Mishal has been elected unopposed as the Chairperson of Mapusa Muncipal Council (MMC).
Mishal was the only person to file a nomination for the post after ex-chairperson Shubhangi Vaingankar’s resignation left the post vacant. The BJP chose Priya Mishal over the councillor of ward no 5, Nutan Bicholkar.
Independent Councillor from Ward 20, Prakash Bhivshet, proposed the name of Priya Mishal for the top post.
Mishal, a councillor of Ward 10, filed two sets of nominations before Chief Officer Amitesh Shirvoikar.
Soon after the announcement of the new chairperson, Vice-Chairperson Chandrashekar Benkar resigned from his post, citing personal reasons to make way for councillor Viraj Phadke.
MLA Joshua D’Souza had also called for a meeting of all councillors and conveyed to them the party’s choice as to who will be the candidates for the chairperson and the vice-chairperson posts.
The election to the chairperson was necessitated after former chairperson Shubanghi Vaigankar resigned from her post after running the council affairs for nearly 18 months.
MMC Vice Chairperson Chandrashekar Benkar has been functioning as the Acting Chairperson of the council.
