PANAJI: Minister for Environment & Climate Change Nilesh Cabral said the State Government has also initiated the process for implementing soft measures for control of erosion.
“Government through the Water ResourcesDepartment has constantly initiated various steps,to curb the erosion by means of structural aswellasnon-structural measures. Structural measuresincludes Anti – sea erosion protection works such as tetrapot’s, concrete blocks , gabbian wallsetc,” said Cabral
He further said that Non–structural measures consist of initiation study for identification of the cause leading tosuch beach erosion & arriving at long term remedy for whichNIOT Chennai has been entrusted the workunderworld bank funded NHP project. The report is expected by end of this year.
Cabral said that the NCSCMin the Beach Carrying Capacity Report has observed the following withrespect to accretion and erosion along the Coastof Goa.
“Overall for a coastal stretch of about 105km,35% of the coast is rocky terrain, 20%of thecoastis stable, 27% is under erosion (i.e. 24%of erosionand 3% of artificial coast) and 17%of thecoastsexperiences accretion,” he said
The minister also said that River mouthsandport areas experience significant erosioncharacteristics. Pocket beaches of Goaareeitherstable or are accreting. The coast hasseawalls(artificial coast) along the coast of Querim.
“The State Government has also initiatedtheprocessfor implementing soft measures for controloferosion,” he said
