New Delhi: As concerns over voter list discrepancies escalate, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday. This meeting comes at a critical juncture when the opposition is intensifying its demand for a parliamentary discussion on voter list anomalies, which they argue pose a significant threat to democratic integrity. Reports of voter list manipulation have consistently surfaced before elections, raising alarms about the potential for electoral fraud.
In the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi emphasized the urgent need for a discussion on voter list issues, highlighting concerns raised across multiple states. He underscored that questions about voter lists are being raised in every state, including Maharashtra, where discrepancies in black and white voter lists have been noted. The entire opposition is united in calling for a discussion on this critical matter.
Priyanka Gandhi echoed these sentiments, warning that the recurring reports of voter list manipulation before elections are perilous for democracy. She urged the government to allow a parliamentary discussion, emphasizing that such a dialogue is essential for protecting democracy and upholding the Constitution.
Meanwhile, a delegation from the Trinamool Congress recently met Election Commission officials to address concerns about duplicate Elector Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers. Although the Election Commission clarified that identical EPIC numbers do not necessarily indicate duplicate or fake voters, the opposition remains skeptical.
Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders are pressing for a thorough revision of voter lists, particularly ahead of the upcoming elections in West Bengal and Assam. The issue of voter list anomalies has been raised in several states, including Maharashtra and Haryana, where serious flaws have been pointed out.
