Kolkata: In a landmark judgment that has resonated across India, a Kolkata court has convicted Sanjay Roy for the heinous rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate medical trainee at RG Kar Hospital. This case, which shook the nation and sparked widespread protests over workplace safety for medical professionals, has finally seen justice being served.
The incident, which occurred on August 9, involved the brutal rape and murder of the young doctor, whose body was discovered in a hospital seminar room. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was identified as the main accused and was arrested on August 10, just a day after the victim’s body was found.
The investigation, which was initially handled by local authorities but later transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following criticism from the Calcutta High Court, uncovered crucial evidence. A Bluetooth earphone found near the victim’s body and CCTV footage played pivotal roles in linking Sanjay Roy to the crime.
The in-camera trial, which began on November 12 and concluded on January 9, involved the examination of 50 witnesses. On January 18, 2025, the Sealdah court in Kolkata pronounced Sanjay Roy guilty, marking a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for the victim and her family.
The case has been a catalyst for nationwide protests, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced workplace safety measures for medical professionals. Leaders such as Suvendu Adhikari and Rahul Sinha have called for severe punishment and a thorough investigation to ensure justice and to send a strong message to society.
The CBI has sought the death penalty for Sanjay Roy, reflecting the gravity of the crime and the public’s demand for stringent punishment. As the nation continues to grapple with the aftermath of this tragedy, the verdict serves as a reminder of the importance of ensuring safe working environments for all professionals.
