Mumbai: Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has shared his heartfelt reaction after a stand at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai was named in his honor. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) made the announcement on April 18, and Rohit called it an “unreal feeling.”
“It’s an unreal feeling to have a stand named after me, and I will forever be grateful. You never know how long you will play, but to receive such an honor is something I could never imagine,” Rohit said in an interview with PTI.
The MCA had earlier this week decided, during its annual general meeting, to name stands after three prominent figures in Mumbai cricket history: Rohit Sharma, former India Test captain Ajit Wadekar, and ex-BCCI president Sharad Pawar.
As per the resolution, the Divecha Pavilion’s Level Three will now be known as the Rohit Sharma Stand, Grand Stand Level 3 will be named after Sharad Pawar, and Grand Stand Level 4 will honor Ajit Wadekar.
Wadekar, who passed away in August 2018, is remembered for leading India to historic series victories in the West Indies and England in 1971. He had played 37 Tests and two ODIs between 1966 and 1974.
MCA President Ajinkya Naik spoke about the decisions, saying, “Today’s decisions reflect our deep respect for the pillars of Mumbai cricket and our determination to build an even stronger future.”
Rohit Sharma joins a prestigious list of cricketing legends, including Sachin Tendulkar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and Vijay Merchant, all of whom have stands named after them at the Wankhede Stadium.
Rohit, who made his Test debut in 2013, has captained India since 2022. Under his leadership, India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, the ICC Champions Trophy in March 2025, and reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
In addition, the MCA paid tribute to its late former president Amol Kale by renaming the match day office at the MCA Pavilion as the ‘MCA Office Lounge in memory of Shri Amol Kale’.
