Washington DC:
In a significant display of diplomatic solidarity, India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, attended the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States on January 20, 2025. This event underscored the robust and strategic partnership between India and the US, a relationship that has been a cornerstone of international diplomacy in recent years.
Jaishankar, who was among the select few world leaders invited to the ceremony, carried a personal letter from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to President Trump. This gesture highlighted the close personal and diplomatic ties between the two leaders. PM Modi was also one of the first global leaders to congratulate Trump on his historic inauguration, expressing his eagerness to continue their collaborative efforts for the mutual benefit of both nations and the global community.
During the inauguration ceremony at the US Capitol, Jaishankar was seated in the front row, a position that reflected the high esteem in which India is held by the US. This prominence was further emphasized by his attendance at the Inauguration Day Prayer Service at St John’s Church, an event that marked the beginning of Trump’s second term.
Jaishankar’s role as Special Envoy of PM Modi added a layer of significance to his presence. He conveyed Modi’s congratulations and best wishes for Trump’s successful term ahead, setting a positive tone for future bilateral engagements. The letter from Modi to Trump was a symbolic reaffirmation of the strong bond between the two nations.
In addition to attending the inauguration, Jaishankar will engage in a series of meetings with key representatives of the Trump Administration and other senior dignitaries visiting the US. These interactions are expected to cover a wide range of topics, including defense, technology, and economic cooperation.
A day prior to the inauguration, Jaishankar held a bilateral meeting with his Japanese counterpart, Takeshi Iwaya. This meeting focused on various aspects of bilateral cooperation, including political, security, economic, technological, and people-to-people domains. This pre-inauguration meeting underscored India’s proactive approach to fostering multilateral relationships.
Jaishankar’s attendance at the inauguration ceremony aligns with India’s long-standing practice of sending special envoys to significant international events. This tradition reinforces India’s commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic relations and participating actively in global affairs.
The event collectively emphasized the special, privileged, and strategic nature of the India-US partnership, a relationship that continues to evolve and strengthen across various sectors.
