New Delhi: Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill expressed disappointment after his team’s defeat in the IPL 2026 final but remained proud of the franchise’s journey throughout the season. Following the loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gill admitted that Gujarat Titans were unable to post a competitive enough total and felt a score in the range of 180 to 190 could have changed the outcome of the match.
Batting first after being put in by RCB, Gujarat Titans managed only 155/8 in their allotted 20 overs. The side struggled after early setbacks, with the usually reliable top order of Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler failing to make significant contributions. Washington Sundar remained unbeaten on 50, while Nishant Sindhu added 20 runs to help the team reach a modest total.
Reflecting on the performance, Gill said the team lost momentum after losing early wickets and was unable to recover during the middle overs. While he acknowledged that the pitch offered some assistance to fast bowlers initially, he did not believe the surface was particularly difficult for batting.
“I think if we had gotten close to 180 or 190, it would have been a good match,” Gill said after the final. He added that despite the low score, the team believed they still had a chance if they could make early breakthroughs during RCB’s chase.
Gill also highlighted the team’s commitment and constant efforts to improve throughout the season. “We kept talking, kept pushing ourselves, kept challenging ourselves in different areas,” he said, while admitting there were still lessons to learn despite reaching the final.
RCB eventually chased down the target comfortably, thanks largely to an unbeaten 75 from Virat Kohli, securing their second consecutive IPL title. Despite the defeat, Gujarat Titans once again demonstrated their consistency by reaching another IPL final and remaining among the league’s strongest teams.
