MARGAO: Collector and District Magistrate of South Goa and H/C Kushavati District, Egna Cleetus chaired a meeting of the District Level Committee for implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, in compliance with directions issued by the Hon’ble Supreme Court in Civil Appeal No. 6174/2023.
The meeting was attended by Additional Collector-II Ramesh Gaonkar, Deputy Collector South II Prajeet R. Chodankar, along with SDMs, Mamlatdars, BDOs, Municipal Council officials and representatives from the Health, Urban Development and Tourism departments. Officials from the Goa Waste Management Corporation, Goa State Pollution Control Board and PI were also present.
During the meeting, the Supreme Court directives and the powers vested with the District Collector under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 for monitoring and implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules were discussed in detail.
The committee also deliberated on action against bulk waste generators violating the Rules, including possible disconnection of water and electricity supply.
Responsibilities of the District Level Committee, District Magistrate and Member Secretary of the Goa State Pollution Control Board were reviewed to ensure effective implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.
The District Magistrate was tasked with monitoring waste management facilities and conducting regular inspections, while the Goa State Pollution Control Board was directed to coordinate with various departments and prepare monthly compliance reports.
The meeting also outlined the responsibilities of Taluka Level Teams headed by Sub-Divisional Magistrates. These teams will inspect dumping sites, monitor illegal dumping activities, identify garbage blackspots and bulk waste generators, and submit fortnightly reports to the Goa State Pollution Control Board.
