CURCHOREM: Three students of the New Educational Institute and a 59-year-old woman were injured by a speeding car in the accident near Shivaji Circle on Thursday at 1.30 pm and later shifted to Community Health Center Curchorem for treatment.
Some eyewitnesses who were at the bus stop said that the driver was driving his car fast, and while he was coming from the Ambedkar Chowk to Sanguem, he lost the control of the four-wheeler at the circle, and the car gave dash to the older lady and three students of the New Educational Institution.
Citizens present near Shivaji Circle at the time of the accident reported that the incident was horrific and a major catastrophe was averted by the grace of God.
People rushed to the spot and rescued the two who were dashed by the speeding car, leaving two of them with minor injuries and one student with serious hand and foot injuries. The rest of them were taken to the Curchorem Community Health Center.
Later on Thursday evening, a girl student who was seriously injured was taken to the District Hospital in Margao.
Yashwant Naik, a local from Sanguem who is an eyewitness during this accident, said that in this horrifying accident, four persons might have lost their lives yesterday, but by the grace of God, somehow, they survived. Considering this situation, local police officials, traffic cells, and guards should be deployed near junctions like Shivaji Circle from 7 to 8 in the morning and from 1:30 to 2 in the afternoon. Such accidents could repeatedly happen at any time near the circle if precautions are neglected again.
Therefore it is necessary to pay immediate attention to the safety of students, he said.
Quepem Police Inspector Deepak Pednekar, who has been given temporary control of Curchorem police station, said that a case has been registered against the driver for the accident that took place in the afternoon near Shivaji Circle, and he has been arrested, and further action is being taken.
Giving further information about the accident, Pednekar said that the Adnan Abdul Wahad Shaikh (32), the residence of Sanguem, said that the car brakes the had failed, but an investigation is underway, and if the crime is proved, legal action will be taken against him, Pednekar said.
