VASCO: A senior military officer announced on Friday that the bodies of two crew members who were missing when a fishing boat and a submarine collided had been found in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Goa.
A huge search for the two crew members was launched last week when the fishing vessel Marthoma sank after colliding with the Indian Navy’s submarine approximately 70 nautical miles off the coast.
According to an Indian Navy spokeswoman, the lifeless remains of the missing crew members were found on the seabed close to the shipwreck Thursday in a joint effort by the Navy, Indian Coast Guard, and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC).
On November 21, the boat struck an Indian Navy submarine and sank. Two crew members were still unaccounted for, he claimed, while eleven of the thirteen were rescued by Indian Navy vessels that same day.
According to the official, the Coast Guard and Indian Navy conducted a joint search for a week, which helped locate the wreckage of the fishing boat.
“With the help of ONGC, the mortal remains of the two crew members were recovered from the area surrounding the wreckage and are currently being turned over to the authorities,” he continued.
