VASCO: The Varnapuri junction near the flyover is yet to get its safety-related traffic measures in place. There is no traffic signal, rumblers, or traffic island at this junction which makes it a death trap for the commuters.
A newly built Varunapuri to Sada flyover has garnered popularity among the people, but at the same time, the entry point of this flyover needs to be more traffic friendly rather than an accident-prone spot.
Since the temporary roundabout was made by some traffic police, the authorities are concerned about the need to put rumblers, traffic signals and a traffic island at this Varunapuri junction.
Three months ago, Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar had said that by the end of May-June this year, the remaining work of placing rumblers, traffic signals and traffic island at this junction will be put in place so that this stretch becomes traffic friendly, but for the reasons best known to the National Highway Authority and other authorities concerned the pending work is yet to be executed at the site.
Ravi Gupta, a traveller, said that the roundabout here at Varunapuri junction is dangerous as the commuter doesn’t get enough idea where to slow down and which side to see since, from all directions, there is a speedy movement of vehicles and pedestrians. There is a need for traffic signals like we have at Dabolim and Verna so that accidents can be avoided.
Firoz Baig, another person, said that half-done work at this junction is dangerous for the people. There is a residential area at a stone’s throw distance from this junction on both sides. The people from Varunapuri defence residential area come out, and the residents of Mangor, Sada and Verna areas meet at this junction. To control and regulate this much traffic, there is a need to put rumblers, a traffic island and a traffic signal here.
When contacted Vasco traffic cell in charge Shailesh Narvekar, he said that he would check the past records of any correspondence between the Mormugao municipality National Highway Authority has been done before.
Narvekar also assured that he would meet the National Highway Authority Assistant Engineer in person to discuss and implement the suggested safety measures at Varunapuri junction to avoid any accidents at this junction.
Repeated effects were made to contact National Highway Authority Assistant Engineer Furtado, but he was unavailable for comments.
