Vasco: In a significant move, Vasco citizens, led by former Congress Minority Chairman Nazir Khan, submitted a memorandum to the Mormugao Deputy Collector on Monday afternoon, opposing the planned Sunburn festival in South Goa.
Nazir Khan addressed the media, urging the government to take immediate action against the event organizers for announcing the venue and allegedly selling tickets without necessary approvals. “It is shocking that the organizers have already announced the event and venue besides selling tickets. The government claims to have no information, yet tickets are being sold. This EDM is spoiling our culture and is a festival of drugs and prostitution that will ruin Goans,” stated Khan.
Echoing Khan’s concerns, social worker and former journalist Elvino Araujo voiced strong opposition to the festival. Araujo pledged support to all NGOs standing against the Sunburn EDM Festival, highlighting the negative impact such events have on the local community. “These festivals are destroying our society. There is only drugs and sex at these events. Tickets are allegedly being sold, and people are buying them without knowing the festival lacks approvals. The government should take action against the organizers and instead promote mass functions that highlight Goan culture. None of the Goans are part of this festival; it attracts a massive influx of people from other parts of the country. We will oppose this event entirely and ensure it is not held in Goa. The people are smart and will take to the streets if necessary to stop such EDMs,” said Araujo.
