VELSAO: Farmers from Velsao, under the banner of the Pale Tolem Xetkaranche Association (PTXA), celebrated World Soil Day with a dedicated initiative to clean and rejuvenate their fields. The event, held on Thursday, also included prayers for a successful upcoming farming season.
The farmers actively removed debris and weeds from their fields, promoting soil health and preparing for future cultivation. The cleanup drive was supported by Cortalim MLA Anton Vas, who facilitated free machinery through the Cortalim Farmers Club.
Speaking at the event, PTXA President Roquezinho D’Souza emphasized the importance of soil conservation in ensuring food security and addressing climate change. “This is a significant day for us. Cleaning the fields and praying for a fruitful season reflects our commitment to sustainable agriculture. We also aim to inspire the youth to return to farming and agriculture for self-sufficiency and employment opportunities,” he said.
D’Souza further highlighted that committee member Anant Satarkar represented PTXA at the Government-organized World Soil Day event at Tonca, Miramar, led by Agriculture Minister Ravi Naik. “We are planning to grow brinjals in these fields next season, as most of our previous crops were damaged by unexpected rains. We urge the youth to join hands in agriculture, which can provide self-employment and contribute to our community’s growth,” he added.
World Soil Day, celebrated annually on December 5, raises awareness about the critical role of soil health in sustainable development. The proactive efforts by PTXA members to protect and nurture their fields were widely applauded by local residents and environmental enthusiasts.
