PANAJI: In a move to honour the legacy of Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the Goa government has declared the Hindi film ‘Chhaava’, which chronicles his life, tax-free in the state.
This announcement was made by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on the evening of Wednesday, coinciding with the 395th birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sambhaji’s father.
Chief Minister Sawant expressed his pleasure in making this declaration, highlighting the film’s portrayal of Sambhaji Maharaj’s valor and courage. “The movie ‘Chhaava’, based on the life and sacrifice of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, will be tax-free in Goa,” Sawant stated. He emphasized that the film brings to life the glorious history of Sambhaji Maharaj, who fought valiantly against the Mughals and the Portuguese for the sake of his faith, country, and duty.
“”The Movie exploring the valor, courage of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj for Dev, Desh and Dharma played by Vicky Kaushal, is bringing the glorious history to the screen. The sacrifice of the second Chhatrapati of the Hindavi Swarajya, who valiantly fought against Moghuls, the Portuguese is an inspiration for all of us,” he added.
Directed by Laxman Utekar, ‘Chhaava’ stars Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, with Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna in key roles. The film, an adaptation of Shivaji Sawant’s Marathi novel ‘Chhava’, has received positive reviews from both audiences and critics. It is on track to become one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of 2025, already surpassing the ₹112 crore mark.
This tax exemption announcement by Goa follows a similar declaration by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who also made the film tax-free in his state on the same day. The film’s success and the tax exemptions reflect its impact in resonating with the audience and its significance in portraying the rich history and sacrifices of the Maratha Empire.
