VASCO: Vasco is set for a major urban transformation with the proposed ₹140-crore Historic Core Development Project, which seeks to modernise the town’s infrastructure while preserving its historic character and identity.
As part of the planning process, Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Wednesday inspected key locations across the town along with officials of the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) and project consultants. The team reviewed several sites identified for redevelopment and assessed the proposed works under the ambitious project.
Speaking during the inspection, Salkar said the project would significantly improve Vasco’s civic infrastructure, public spaces and overall urban landscape, creating a cleaner, better-planned and more people-friendly environment.
“The Historic Core Development Project will give Vasco a much-needed transformation. Our focus is not only on upgrading infrastructure but also on preserving the town’s heritage while making it more vibrant and accessible for residents, businesses and visitors,” he said.
According to Salkar, the project adopts a balanced approach by integrating modern civic amenities with the town’s historical identity. The proposed works include improvements to roads, pedestrian infrastructure, public spaces and other urban facilities aimed at enhancing accessibility and the overall appearance of the town.
He said the site inspection was carried out to assess ground realities and ensure that the redevelopment plan addresses the needs of residents while safeguarding Vasco’s unique heritage. Inputs from technical experts and officials, he added, will help shape a project that delivers long-term benefits.
The Historic Core Development Project is expected to be one of the largest urban renewal initiatives undertaken in Vasco in recent years. Once implemented, it is expected to improve the quality of life for residents, boost commercial activity, enhance tourism potential and create a modern, heritage-sensitive urban landscape.
