Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games has received a major boost, with the Commonwealth Sport Executive Board officially recommending the city as the host, pending the final decision expected in November 2025. This move is part of Gujarat’s ambitious Rs 37,000 crore Olympic Readiness Programme, aimed at transforming the city into a global sporting hub.
The Urban Housing and Development Department of the Gujarat government is leading the expenditure, which goes beyond staging the Games. Officials emphasise that the investment is designed to create lasting sporting and urban infrastructure, aligning with India’s broader vision of a potential Olympic bid for 2036.
For the Commonwealth Games itself, around Rs 1,200-1,500 crore has been allocated for operations and event management, covering athlete accommodation, logistics, and ceremonies. When stadium upgrades, training facilities, urban beautification, and transport improvements are factored in, the total cost is expected to reach approximately Rs 5,000 crore. These allocations represent a key component of the state’s long-term Rs 37,000 crore Olympic readiness plan.
Infrastructure projects include revamped stadium clusters at the Sardar Patel Sports Complex, new athlete villages, and metro extensions all designed not just for the CWG 2030 but also to demonstrate India’s capacity to host large-scale international sporting events. The state government sees the Commonwealth Games as a proving ground for efficiency, international standards, and organisational capability, setting the stage for a credible Olympic bid in 2036.
If approved, Ahmedabad will become only the second Indian city to host the Commonwealth Games after Delhi in 2010. With large-scale preparations already underway, the city is on track to showcase its sporting and urban infrastructure on a global stage, reinforcing India’s ambitions to become a premier destination for international sports.
