PANAJI: Internal unrest appears to be brewing within the Goa Congress following the appointment of former GPCC president Girish Chodankar as the new Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) chief, with members of the party’s social media team announcing their resignations and publicly expressing dissatisfaction over the leadership change.
Social Media Chairman Divyakumar tendered his resignation with immediate effect, citing personal reasons. In a public statement, he thanked the party leadership and colleagues for the opportunity to serve and for their support during his tenure.
Meanwhile, State Social Media Coordinator Shamila Siddiqui announced her resignation while sharply criticising the party’s decision-making process. In a social media post, she claimed that grassroots workers and supporters had been ignored despite recent defections and growing dissatisfaction within the organisation.
Siddiqui expressed support for former GPCC president Amit Patkar, stating that he had worked extensively over the past four years to strengthen the party across Goa. She questioned the reappointment of Girish Chodankar ahead of the Assembly elections and alleged that key decisions concerning Goa Congress were being taken without adequate consultation with grassroots workers.
The development comes shortly after Girish Chodankar’s appointment as GPCC president, a move that has triggered debate within sections of the party.
Adding to the speculation, Amit Patkar posted a lengthy message on social media stressing that true strength lies not in positions or titles but in commitment to Goa and its people. Without directly referring to the leadership change, Patkar highlighted his four-year journey across the state alongside party workers and supporters, emphasizing efforts to protect Goa’s identity, culture and people’s rights.
He stated that the movement was built on the collective efforts of countless workers and reiterated his commitment to issues concerning farmers, youth, women, workers, fishermen and ordinary citizens.
While the Congress leadership has not officially commented on the resignations, the developments indicate growing unease within sections of the party cadre ahead of the 2027 Goa Assembly elections.
Political observers believe the resignations and public statements may pose an early challenge for the new GPCC leadership as it seeks to unite the organisation and prepare for upcoming electoral battles.
