BORIM: A violent quarrel between two cousins in Borim ended in a gruesome murder on Sunday, after a 58-year-old man was allegedly attacked with an axe near the Sai Baba temple area along the Ponda-Margao highway.
The deceased has been identified as Deepak Raya Naik, a resident of Khajorda, Borim. According to Goa Police, the prime accused, Gauresh Kushan Naik, 20, fled the scene after the attack and is currently absconding. Police have meanwhile detained his brother, Saideep Naik, in connection with the case.
Investigators said the incident stemmed from an ongoing dispute within the family. What reportedly began as a verbal confrontation quickly escalated into violence, during which the accused allegedly struck Deepak on the neck with a sharp weapon, believed to be an axe. The victim collapsed on the spot and succumbed to his injuries before help could arrive.
Police sources said there had been tension between the cousins over the past few days following an earlier scuffle over a minor issue. On Sunday, another disagreement allegedly broke out over the shifting of roof tiles, leading to the deadly assault.
Soon after the incident, police and forensic officials rushed to the scene and collected crucial evidence.
A murder case has been registered under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and efforts are underway to trace the absconding accused.
The investigation is being conducted under the supervision of DySP Shivram Vaigankar and PI Mohan Gaude of Goa Police.
