Fatality count increases a week after the devastating blaze at a guesthouse in South Delhi’s Hauz Rani area
New Delhi: A Bangladeshi woman who suffered severe burn injuries in the devastating hotel fire in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area has died while undergoing treatment, raising the death toll in the tragedy to 23.
The woman had been receiving medical care since sustaining critical injuries in the blaze that engulfed Flourish Stays Bed and Breakfast in the Hauz Rani locality on June 4. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday.
With her death, the number of lives lost in one of Delhi’s deadliest recent fire incidents has climbed further. Authorities confirmed that the deceased was a Bangladeshi national who had been hospitalised since the incident.
The fire tore through the guesthouse, trapping several occupants and causing widespread devastation. Twenty one people were killed in the immediate aftermath, while a number of others were rescued and admitted to hospitals with varying degrees of burn injuries and smoke inhalation.
The death toll had already increased to 22 last week after a Nigerian national, who was also receiving treatment for serious burn injuries, passed away in hospital. The latest fatality has now pushed the count to 23.
The tragedy has drawn attention to fire safety measures in lodging establishments across the national capital. Emergency responders had launched a large scale rescue operation on the night of the incident, battling flames and thick smoke as they worked to evacuate guests and staff from the building.
Several injured survivors continue to receive medical treatment, while authorities are carrying out investigations into the cause of the fire and examining whether safety regulations were adequately followed at the establishment.
The incident remains one of the most severe fire disasters reported in Delhi this year, with the rising death toll highlighting the extent of the devastation caused by the blaze.
