VASCO: Derick Vales, Panch of Ward No. 2, was elected unopposed as the Deputy Sarpanch of Sancoale Panchayat on Monday afternoon. Two nominations were received for the post—one from Vales and the other from Maurelio Carvalho. However, Carvalho’s nomination was rejected after his nomination found no seconder, leading to the unopposed victory of Vales.
The election process began at 10 am with the scrutiny of nominations, and the results were declared by 11:30 am. Nicholas Quadros served as the presiding officer for the election.
Speaking to the media after his victory, Vales assured the people that he would focus on development and fulfilling his duties responsibly. “We are a united team of Panch members, and we plan to take up various development projects in the Panchayat. Our most significant project is the new Panchayat Ghar, and we will work closely with the minister to move this forward. We also intend to clear many pending files at the BDO office to ensure development work can proceed,” said Vales.
Reflecting on his unopposed victory, Vales added, “The opposition candidate, Mauricio Carvalho, did file his nomination, but he did not get a seconder, which is something unheard of in the history of Goan politics. This ultimately led to my unopposed win.”
Outgoing Deputy Sarpanch Girish Pillai extended his best wishes to Vales, emphasizing the importance of unity within the Panchayat. “We congratulate Vales on his victory. Our Panchayat will remain united as an eleven-member body, working for the betterment of the village. The Panchayat Ghar file is pending due to technical issues, but it will be cleared soon,” said Pillai.
Pillai also urged the villagers to approach the Panchayat directly with any concerns, rather than causing disruptions during Gram Sabha meetings. “We can work together with the contribution of the people. If there are projects that the villagers do not want, they should express their views, and we will support them in scrapping those projects,” he added.
