PANAJI: The Directorate of Panchayats has initiated steps to ensure representation and accessibility for persons with disabilities across village panchayats in Goa following an ultimatum issued by the Disability Rights Association of Goa (DRAG).
In a communication addressed to all Block Development Officers, the Directorate has instructed officials to complete the nomination of persons with disabilities in all panchayats by May 30, 2026.
The memorandum also directs authorities to ensure that public places across villages are made accessible to persons with disabilities within a period of six months.
The move comes after DRAG warned of possible legal action if accessibility measures were not implemented within the stipulated timeframe.
The association had demanded immediate intervention to improve inclusion and remove barriers faced by persons with disabilities in public spaces and local governance.
DRAG President Avelino de Sa said the association has also appealed to eligible persons with disabilities who are interested in being nominated to panchayat bodies to contact the organisation at the earliest.
