CUNCOLIM: A man from Jharkhand residing in Cuncolim was allegedly cheated of ₹1,74,577 after clicking on a fraudulent APK file sent through WhatsApp under the pretext of applying for the PM Awas Yojana housing scheme.
According to the complaint filed by Birbal Nayak, the incident occurred on October 3 at around 1 pm at the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), Cuncolim.
Unknown accused persons allegedly contacted Nayak through WhatsApp messages and induced him to download an APK file purportedly linked to the government housing scheme. Believing the offer to be genuine, Nayak clicked on the link, following which ₹1,74,577 was withdrawn from his bank account through multiple transactions without his knowledge.
The incident highlights how fraudsters can exploit the names of government welfare schemes to trick unsuspecting people into downloading malicious applications and gaining unauthorised access to their financial accounts.
Further investigation is being conducted by PSI Aditya Sawant of Cuncolim police station.
