PANAJI: Emphasising that fire prevention cannot be left solely to authorities, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday said fire safety is a collective responsibility of industries, institutions and citizens across the state.
He was speaking at the National Fire Service Day programme held at the Fire Force Training Ground at St Inez in Panaji, organised by the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services. Chief Secretary V Candavelou attended as Guest of Honour, along with senior officials and fire personnel.
Paying tribute to firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty, Sawant lauded their courage and dedication. He said their selfless service in protecting lives and property deserves the highest respect.
Referring to this year’s theme, “Safe School, Safe Hospital, Fire Safe Society – Together for Fire Prevention,” the Chief Minister stressed the need for greater awareness and proactive measures. He said a series of awareness programmes will be conducted across Goa in the coming days.
Highlighting prevention as key, Sawant noted that the principle of “prevention is better than cure” must guide emergency services. He urged industries, particularly in tourism and manufacturing, to strictly comply with fire safety norms.
The Chief Minister also outlined government initiatives to strengthen fire safety infrastructure, including plans to establish new fire control rooms in Panaji, Margao and Curchorem to ensure faster emergency response. Zonal control systems are also being planned to improve coordination.
He said the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS 112) has been instrumental in integrating fire, police and medical services for prompt assistance, stressing that inter-departmental coordination is crucial during emergencies.
On community participation, Sawant informed that over 650 volunteers have been trained under the Apada Mitra and Apada Sakhi programmes by the Goa Fire and Emergency Services, contributing to disaster response efforts.
He further said the government is upgrading training facilities into a full-fledged Fire Academy to enhance professional training for personnel and civilians alike.
During the event, fire personnel were honoured for exemplary service, while competitions such as drawing and essay writing were organised to spread awareness among students. Sawant reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening fire safety systems and called on citizens to remain vigilant and actively participate in safety initiatives.
