VASCO: The footpath opposite the Mormugao municipality building has become a safe haven for the homeless and for the beggars lately. The beautiful footpath which existed a few years ago has now turned filthy with human and animal excreta, damaged tiles, Electricity street lamps etc and needs immediate attention.
It won’t be an exaggeration if one says that the Port town has gone to dogs looking at the nearby vicinity of the Mormugao municipality these days. The footpath next to the municipality building, which was renovated under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), has now completely turned into a den for anti-social elements, beggars and the homeless, who are seen 24×7 sleeping, sitting and begging on this footpath.
Social Activist Tara Kerkar pointed out that it is really said on the part of the Mormugao municipality for not undertaking proper maintenance and repairs of this footpath area and leaving it to rot.
The street lamps here which were installed to give pleasant illumination have now been damaged, and the wires of this lamp have been exposed to the visitors, which could also lead to electrocution of someone.
She further said that the tiles and the pavers on this footpath are totally damaged due to no maintenance, and it remains always soiled with the human and animal excreta, which gives an unbearable smell and no place to use this footpath. She further demanded that the municipality take up this footpath’s repair and maintenance work.
When contacted, Mormugao Municipal Council Chairperson Damodar Kaskar said that the footpath was built around 15 years back, and he is not much aware of more details. But he assured of getting more details and looking into the matter.
