PANAJI: Even after the arrest of a woman in connection with the death of Udupi businessman Sandeep Salaim, investigators are still waiting for the one piece of evidence that could determine how the case ultimately unfolds—the forensic toxicology report.
While Calangute Police have attributed the incident to a robbery that allegedly went wrong, the exact cause of Salaim’s death has not yet been scientifically established. Investigators have acknowledged that the findings of the chemical analysis will be crucial before they can conclusively explain what led to the 42-year-old’s death.
Police allege that the accused befriended Salaim, accompanied him to a resort room in Calangute and stole his gold chain after he became unconscious. The recovered jewellery has strengthened the robbery angle, but officials say the medical cause of death remains under investigation.
The focus has now shifted to the viscera examination, which is expected to reveal whether any sedatives, intoxicants or other substances were present in the victim’s body. Until those results are received, investigators cannot conclusively determine whether any substance administered to Salaim directly contributed to his death or whether other medical factors were involved.
The pending forensic analysis has become central to the investigation, as it is expected to either reinforce the prosecution’s current theory or require investigators to reassess key aspects of the case.
Police have also revealed that the accused is suspected of using a similar method to target other visitors in Goa, allegedly stealing valuables after rendering victims incapable of resisting. However, investigators say those incidents did not result in fatalities, making Salaim’s death an isolated outcome that still requires medical explanation.
Officials continue to maintain that there is no evidence at this stage suggesting the involvement of additional suspects. Nevertheless, investigators have not ruled out examining every possible lead as the probe progresses.
Legal experts point out that in cases involving unexplained deaths, forensic evidence often becomes the strongest component of the prosecution’s case. The toxicology findings are therefore expected to play a decisive role in determining the appropriate charges and establishing the sequence of events inside the hotel room.
With scientific evidence still awaited, investigators say the case remains open and several questions are yet to be answered. Until the forensic report is received, the circumstances surrounding Salaim’s death are likely to remain the subject of continued investigation.
