VASCO: Fr Bolmax Pereira’s anticipatory bail application hearing was adjourned for tomorrow as Vasco police sought more time to give their say on the plea.
After Vasco police filed a case against him under sections 295 (Injuring or defiling place of worship, with intent to insult the religion of any class) and 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), the parish priest of Chicalim Church, Fr. Bolmax Pereira, filed an anticipatory bail application on Saturday.
The case stemmed from remarks Fr. Pereira made about the Maratha warrior Shivaji Maharaj during a sermon a few days prior.
At the Vasco police station, a case has been reported, and complaints have also been made at the Cuncolim and Canacona police stations. Fr. Bolmax expressed regret but noted that his remarks about the king of the 17th century had been “taken out of context and misinterpreted.”
On social media, a priest’s video comment that “Chhatrapati Shivaji cannot be considered as a God” went viral.
Many right-wing groups, notably Bajrang Dal, denounced his comment.
