New Delhi: Fuel prices across India witnessed another increase on Saturday, with petrol and diesel becoming costlier for the third time in just 10 days. The latest revision pushed petrol prices up by 87 paise per litre and diesel by 91 paise per litre, adding to the financial burden on consumers amid rising global energy costs linked to tensions in the Middle East.
In Delhi, petrol is now priced at ₹99.51 per litre, while diesel has reached ₹92.49 per litre. Oil companies had earlier raised prices on May 15 by ₹3 per litre, followed by another increase of around 90 paise on May 19. With the latest revision, fuel prices have risen by nearly ₹5 per litre within a short span.
Among the major metropolitan cities, Kolkata recorded petrol prices at ₹110.64 per litre, while Mumbai stood at ₹108.49 and Chennai at ₹105.31. Diesel prices also climbed sharply, reaching ₹97.02 per litre in Kolkata, ₹95.02 in Mumbai and ₹96.98 in Chennai.
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) prices were also revised upward. In Delhi, the cost of CNG increased by ₹1 per kilogram, taking the retail price to ₹81.09 per kg.
The recent hikes come as state run oil companies continue adjusting retail fuel prices in response to higher international crude oil rates and increasing import costs. Global energy markets have remained volatile due to the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have significantly impacted crude oil supply concerns.
Despite the recent increases, government sources highlighted that fuel prices had previously been reduced multiple times over the last four years. Earlier this year, excise duty cuts on fuel had provided significant relief, particularly through reductions in additional excise duties on diesel.
Officials also pointed out that during earlier periods of elevated crude oil prices, both the government and public sector oil companies absorbed substantial financial pressure to shield consumers from sharper increases. Oil companies reportedly faced losses worth thousands of crores over recent years while additional financial support was extended to maintain LPG subsidies and consumer relief measures.
