VELSAO: In an unusual incident, unknown miscreants dumped several large garbage bags near the entry gate of the Velsao Panchayat office on Tuesday morning, shocking staff and locals. The matter was immediately brought to the attention of Sarpanch Diana Gouveia and the Panchayat Secretary, who later filed a complaint with the Verna Police.
Upon discovering the garbage, the Panchayat staff promptly informed Sarpanch Gouveia. Speaking to reporters, Gouveia expressed her concerns and disappointment over the incident, emphasizing the potential risks and the lack of courtesy shown by those responsible.
“I don’t know who has kept the garbage here, but whoever it is could have at least informed the Panchayat or alerted me or the staff. They could have told us they cleaned up some area and collected the garbage, requesting us to clear it through the contractor,” Gouveia said.
The Sarpanch pointed out the safety hazards of such anonymous actions.
“I am not aware of what is in these bags; there could be anything inside, including drugs. If we try to clear this garbage and someone shoots a video claiming there are illegal substances inside, who will be held accountable? It could put me in serious trouble,” she explained.
Gouveia further stressed that the Panchayat office is not a dumping yard and urged the public to act responsibly.
“This is not a designated site for garbage disposal. If we keep quiet, others may start dumping more garbage here and dirty the area. We don’t even know if this garbage was collected from our village or brought from elsewhere,” she added.
The Sarpanch has also written a letter to the Verna Police, urging a thorough investigation to identify the culprits and prevent such incidents in the future.
“We need to take action to ensure our Panchayat office does not become a dumping ground for miscreants. The police must step in to address this and deter any such behavior in the future,” Gouveia concluded.
The Verna Police have acknowledged the complaint and are expected to initiate inquiries soon. Meanwhile, the Panchayat has requested residents to report any suspicious activities around the office premises.
