PANAJI: Goa could face a drinking water crisis in the coming weeks if the monsoon fails to gain momentum, with the state currently having water reserves sufficient for only about a month, according to Water Resources Minister Subhash Phal Dessai.
The minister said the delayed arrival of widespread monsoon showers and the continued dry spell have prevented reservoirs from receiving the expected inflow, resulting in rapidly declining water storage levels across the state.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have indicated that water supply restrictions may have to be introduced from July if rainfall remains inadequate over the next fortnight.
The state has experienced significantly lower-than-normal rainfall during a period when reservoirs are usually replenished after the summer months. The shortage of rain has raised concerns not only about drinking water availability but also about its impact on agriculture and other water-dependent sectors.
Government officials have urged citizens to use water judiciously and avoid wastage as the state navigates the uncertain monsoon season. Efforts are also being made to manage existing water resources efficiently while keeping a close watch on weather forecasts and reservoir conditions.
The situation has caused anxiety among farmers, many of whom are waiting for sustained rainfall before beginning cultivation activities. Several agricultural areas across Goa have already reported delays in seasonal farming operations due to insufficient rain.
Despite the concerns, officials remain hopeful that improved monsoon activity in the coming days will help replenish reservoirs and ease pressure on water supplies. The next few weeks are expected to be crucial in determining whether the state can avoid water rationing measures and maintain normal supply levels.
The government has assured residents that contingency plans are being reviewed and that all necessary steps will be taken to safeguard drinking water supplies if the dry conditions persist.
