PANAJI: Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant on Friday chaired the 17th Board Meeting of the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC), which approved a series of measures aimed at making the State’s waste management system more efficient, sustainable and inclusive.
The meeting, attended by Minister Atanasio Monserrate and other Board Members, cleared proposals for empanelment of additional door-to-door waste collection agencies and Project Management Consultants (PMCs) to enhance operational reach and service quality.
Among the major decisions, the Board approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Directorate of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (DSDE) and the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) to introduce a Waste Management Technician course and establish a Centre of Excellence to train staff of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).
To promote better source segregation, the meeting also decided to implement five-way waste segregation in all educational institutions, and install sanitary waste incinerators and dispensers in every government office.
In a major environmental move, the GWMC approved the removal of legacy hazardous waste from the Sunrise Zinc site in Cuncolim to an authorised treatment facility in Pissurlem.
The Corporation will also deploy wet-waste vehicles for Saligao and Taleigao, funded under a GIZ-supported project, and encourage public-private partnerships for community-level biomethanation (CBG) plants.
Additionally, the SINTEF (Norway) collaboration for the construction and demolition (C&D) waste project has been extended, and a pilot PET bottle recycling initiative will be launched with Village Recyclers Foundation, focusing on empowering women self-help groups (SHGs).
Reaffirming the government’s environmental commitment, the Chief Minister said, “Goa remains dedicated to building a cleaner, greener and sustainable future.”
