Panjim: Former India international and Chennaiyin FC footballer Mandar Rao Dessai believes Goa continues to be a powerhouse of sporting talent but stressed that young athletes need the right guidance, encouragement, and infrastructure to reach their full potential.
Speaking at a sports kit distribution event in Arpora–Nagoa, organized by the V.P. Arpora–Nagoa Panchayat, the 33-year-old Goan star reflected on the evolution of sports culture in India. He noted that while access to facilities and resources has improved over the years, nurturing local talent still requires consistent community and institutional support.
“When I began playing, there were several challenges — limited access to equipment, infrastructure, and financial backing. Today, opportunities have increased, but many young players still need motivation and proper direction to progress,” Mandar said.
He emphasized that building a strong sporting ecosystem goes beyond infrastructure, pointing to the importance of emotional and moral support from families and local communities. “Family encouragement is vital. I’ve had the privilege to represent Goa and India, and I see many young athletes here who can achieve even more with the right training and mentoring,” he added.
Mandar called for greater involvement from coaches, clubs, and local bodies in identifying and grooming emerging players from a young age. He also underscored discipline, hard work, and dedication as the foundations of success in any sport.
“Football runs in the blood of every Goan. With proper guidance and the right mindset, Goa can continue to produce exceptional athletes across all disciplines,” he said, thanking organizers and urging continued investment in grassroots sports development across the state.
