PANAJI: The Morjim village panchayat and the Department of Tourism have been instructed by the Bombay High Court in Goa to forbid cremations in the vicinity of the Olive Ridley turtle nesting site in Morjim.
The Department of Tourism owns the land, which is roughly 70 meters from the turtle nesting site. The villagers used the land for cremations.
In their petition, the Morjim villagers requested permission from the court to keep using the location for cremation, claiming that it had been used for this purpose for several decades and that the turtles, who had been laying eggs there, were unaffected.
The Director of Tourism, the Mamlatdar, the Pernem Deputy Collector, and the Morjim Panchayat Secretary were instructed by the Court to make sure that no cremation activity is carried out in a plot owned by the Department of Tourism close to the turtle nesting site, citing the turtles’ resilience as justification for not permitting such disturbing activities.
