PANAJI: As mining activities gradually resume in Goa after years of disruption, the Mines Safety & Productivity Council of Goa, Sindhudurg and Kolhapur has called for the industry’s revival to be centred around strong safety practices and responsible operations.
The issue was highlighted during the valedictory programme of the 42nd Mine Safety Week hosted by Fomento Resources in Goa.
Speaking at the event, Council Vice-President Dheeraj Kumar Jagdish said the restarting of mining operations presents an opportunity to rebuild the sector with greater emphasis on worker safety, environmental responsibility and technological advancement. He stressed the importance of following statutory safety standards and adopting modern systems to ensure sustainable mining practices.
The Goa mining industry had witnessed a prolonged slowdown over the past decade following legal and regulatory hurdles. However, with fresh auctions and operational clearances, mining activities have begun resuming in phases across the State.
Officials at the programme noted that no mining accidents had been reported in Goa during the past year, describing it as a positive sign for the sector’s transition back to operations.
During the event, authorities also released a Mine Safety Report and reiterated the need for continuous awareness and monitoring to maintain safe working conditions in mines.
Director General of Mines Safety Ujjwal Tah emphasised the importance of achieving “Zero Harm” in mining operations and encouraged the industry to move towards environmentally sustainable and safer mining methods with reduced dependence on explosives and hazardous practices.
