CANACONA: Following bitter complaints of public grievances and particularly as a fallout of a few sting operations exposing corruption at Polem checkpost, Speaker and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar cornered officials of Excise, RTO and Police in a meeting at Canacona on Wednesday.
At one point Speaker Tawadkar retorted, ‘The infamy of the checkpost at Polem will not end unless the two-three people are suspended’.
While a few sting operations caught officials taking bribes at the border, recently in yet another expose, AAP president Amit Palekar exposed how officials of different departments are taking bribes, looting particularly inter-State motorists.
Taking cognizance of such incidents at Polem Check Point, the MLA and Speaker of Canacona held a meeting with officials of various departments including the heads of the Excise Department, RTO (Transport Department) and Police Department on Wednesday at Sristhal Rest House and reviewed the situation at Pole Check Post.
Stating such behaviour of the government officials will not be accepted henceforth, asked the officials whether the situation will improve only after 2-3 staff are suspended for such misconduct and that will stop bringing more disrepute to Polem checkpost stop.
Stating there is always a race to get posted for duty at Polem check-post, Tawadkar said the scandalous affairs taking place at the Checknaka(Check Post), will be discussed with the Chief Secretary of Goa and other senior officers and warned that the matter will be properly investigated and action will be taken against the culprits.
“The disrepute earned for Polem Check Post will not stop unless at least three persons are suspended,” Tawadkar said, before issuing orders to his staff to fix a meeting with the Chief Secretary and other Senior Officers on the issue.
BJP Canaocna blocks General Secretary and ex-CMC Chairperson Divakar Pagi informed ‘The vehicles coming from outside the State are stopped and checked frequently, due to which many tourists arriving in Goa do not want to come back to Goa due to this harassment. The impact is purely felt on the tourism business in a big way.
Meanwhile, RTO ADT Ravinda Satardear informed that the money found in the drawer of RTO officials at Polem Check post pertains to the tax collection of that day and further informed that the day’s collection is on an average of Rs.3 lakhs.
Deputy Superintendent of Traffic Police Prabod Shirwaikar, RTO Ravindra Satardekar, Nishan, Sub-Inspector of Police Canacona Swadesh Desai, Excise Inspector Shamba Naik, were some of the officials present for the meeting.

Meanwhile, welcoming the move in the right direction, Canconcar also asked Speaker and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar, when he is going to address the issue of ‘Black Out’ occurrences in the taluka.
In a social post, Canacona resident Samrat Bhagat wrote, ‘To address the issue of frequent “Black Out” occurrences in the Taluka, I kindly request the Honourable Speaker to facilitate a meeting with the Electricity Department officials. As the actual problem lies within the department, a constructive dialogue can help resolve public grievances. I believe that with collaborative efforts, we can find a sustainable solution to ensure an uninterrupted power supply for the betterment of our community.
Backing up the post, a social worker from Palolem Socour Da Silva wrote, ‘Certainly this is one area we would appreciate the honourable speaker must spare some attention as it’s been affecting a lot of people and the businesses too’.
