PANAJI: A Goan chef is part of the crew aboard the expedition vessel MV Hondius, which has come under international attention following reports of a suspected hantavirus outbreak in the South Atlantic region.
The ship, engaged in expedition cruising, has reportedly witnessed illness among several passengers and crew, with concerns rising after some cases turned serious and led to medical evacuations. Authorities and health monitoring agencies are tracking the situation closely, while quarantine measures and contact tracing efforts are understood to be underway in coordination with multiple countries.
Public health officials have clarified that hantavirus is generally rare and does not spread easily between humans, with infection typically linked to exposure to infected rodents or contaminated environments. While the situation onboard has triggered precautionary responses, experts have indicated that the broader risk to the general public remains limited.
Amid the developing situation, the presence of a Goan culinary staff member on the vessel has drawn attention back home, as families and maritime circles closely monitor updates regarding the crew’s safety and condition.
